We have to first receive his love before we can see ourselves through the lenses of the Father’s love.  We are the way we are because we struggle to accept the true unconditional love of God.  It’s getting away from the religious aspect of God and accepting his forgiveness.  So that you can love others with the same love you receive.  God is not mad at you!
